What to do when it rains?

Amsterdam’s weather is famously unpredictable. We often joke that we have four seasons in a day, nine months of autumn, and three months of spring—if we’re lucky. Rain is simply part of the experience, but that doesn’t mean your day is ruined. The city has plenty of cozy and exciting indoor activities to explore.

Want to admire the city without getting soaked? Step inside one of its historic canal houses! The Grachtenmuseum tells the story of the city’s famous canals, while Museum Van Loon, Huis Bartolotti, and Museum Willet-Holthuysen let you peek inside beautifully preserved 17th-century homes. It’s like time-traveling—without the bad weather!

For a shopping escape, head to De Bijenkorf, Amsterdam’s iconic department store. Whether you browse designer fashion, sip a coffee in the café, or simply enjoy some people-watching, it’s the perfect place to stay dry in style.

The Jordaan is full of charming cafés where you can warm up with a hot chocolate and whipped cream. Skip the touristy spots and find a cozy corner in one of the local brown cafés for the ultimate Amsterdam experience. Café ‘t Papeneiland is one of our favourites, which has a hidden tunnel to a former hidden church. If you’re in the mood for something fun, visit an old-school bar where locals gather to play board games over a good beer.

For something a little more adventurous, try an escape room at Sherlocked, located in the historic Beurs van Berlage. Solve mysteries in a stunning setting while staying completely dry. If you’d rather indulge in Dutch flavors, head to Kaasbar Amsterdam for a cheese tasting, or book a beer or spirits tasting at one of the city’s many specialty bars.

Don’t care about the weather? Book one of our tours with a local guide. At Guidance Travel, we take you beyond the tourist spots to discover the city’s hidden gems. So grab an umbrella (or don’t, and embrace the Dutch way) and let’s explore.
