We have three favorite spots in the city to eat our herring:
– Herring cart Nieuwmarkt
Every Saturday at Nieuwmarkt square, there is an organic market. At the corner of the square, across the street of ‘Cheat Day’ (Nieuwmarkt 30H), there is a small white herring cart. Han is selling the best herring in the city, a must try!

– Stubbe’s Haring
A well-known spot for fresh herring, Stubbe’s Haring is a bigger cart-style shop located on a bridge.

What is Herring and Why is it So Popular?
Herring is a small, oily fish found in the North Sea. The Dutch version, called “Hollandse Nieuwe,” is young herring caught between May and July, preserved in a light brine for a fresh and slightly salty taste. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, it’s both delicious and healthy!
Eating herring is a Dutch tradition, and many locals enjoy it by holding the fish by the tail and eating it whole. Others prefer it sliced with pickles and onions. Whichever way you try it, herring is an essential Dutch experience!
So if you’re in the Netherlands, don’t miss out on this classic dish—especially at these top locations!
